A lot of "ADA compliant" plugins just add a floating toolbar on top of your site. They don't touch the underlying code — which is exactly what a screen reader reads.
Courts have already rejected these overlays as evidence of compliance, and in 2025 the FTC fined one of the largest overlay vendors for overstating what its tool could actually do. If a site wasn't built accessible at the code level, a widget sitting on top of it doesn't change that.
